I would like to put the following questions to Patrick Manning, Member of Parliament for San Fernando East:

Wednesday, June 1, 2011

I urge the Government to bring a building code bill to Parliament with dispatch. I am aware that there is a Small Building Code which was prepared by Cariri and a building code proposed by the Board of Engineering of T&T.

Justifiably so or not, celebrating Indian Arrival Day as a public holiday gives the impression that the arrival of Indians to T&T was more important than the arrival of other groups. I therefore suggest that Phagwa replaces Indian Arrival Day as a public holiday.

I am totally dissatisfied with the subtitles on TV6. I don’t know who is responsible but they are totally unreadable. Viewers depend on the subtitles so I cannot understand why such incompetence is allowed to continue day after day.

This year’s observance of World No Tobacco Day falls in the midst of preparations for September’s United Nations high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases.

In 1977 when I returned to Trinidad, no one bothered about jaundice in newborn babies. I often wonder what became of those babies.

Words cannot fully express my disgust at the sad spectacle of the Bishop of T&T blessing the march organised by Patrick Manning, who was lightly punished for his behaviour in Parliament, after he made excessive, wild and unfounded accusations against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar...

It is commendable that the PP Government has celebrated its first year without any major fallouts, but it’s no reason to boast as there is still a long way to go. The minor conflicts should not be dismissed as family squabbles as this is not a family business.

Any visitor landing in T&T on Tuesday night could reasonably have asked when is election day. What the country saw on that night was pure naked campaigning, minus calypsonians Crazy and De Fosto.

There seems to be a fixation with newspaper reporters and former Prime Ministers. Why are they trying to make these men into analysts, and the authority on what is good governance. Listening to the comments of these failed politicians, you can’t get any balance, only bias.

The oil and gas revenues of our country seem to play a very little part in the development of the living standards of our people. We have over the years received billions of dollars.

The following poem, titled Evolution, was written on the occasion of the First Indian Arrival Day in 1995. I share it with your readers.

The People’s Partnership Government has published over 250 items of achievements during its first year in its booklet, An Era of Caring Has Begun. It amazes me that so much has been done and published up front for anyone to check.

It’s the first anniversary of the coalition which took power with an unprecedented popular mandate. They’ve been extensively analysed and polled, so there probably isn’t any merit in rehashing what was said in the last few weeks.

In our beautiful country of Trinidad and Tobago we are facing a detrimental problem. It is a problem that is affecting our youth and in essence, directly affecting our country’s future. This problem is a lack of leaders and role models.
