Rapso Explosion showcases oral tradition

Published:
Friday, January 13, 2012

The 15th edition of Rapso Explosion is scheduled to take place on February 14, at the Nalis Amphitheatre, National Library, Abercromby Street, Port-of-Spain, at 3 pm. The event is designed to showcase the power of the Oral tradition in the Carnival. It brings the audience into direct contact with the traditional masquerader whose forte is speech. The midnight robber, the pierrot grenade and the Chantuelle power provide the foundation for the event. Inside of this atmosphere of tradition is woven the new and contemporary styles of today’s rapso artistes, storytellers, spoken word styles and chanters.

Rapso Explosion represents a new approach to the Carnival programming in that it is not a competition. Established since 1998 by the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (Tuco), the event is produced by the Network Community Organisation in collaboration with Nalis. People desirous of participating in Rapso Explosion are advised to submit a copy of their track and relevant contact information to any Tuco office nationwide. The deadline for submission is Monday, February 6.
