The issue of the mayorship for San Fernando held by former Congress of the People (COP) member Marlene Coudray is a thing of the past, says the party’s political leader Prakash Ramadhar. The COP leader said this during an interview with reporters immediately after the party’s interfaith service to mark the second anniversary of the People’s Partnership.

The service was held at Gaston Court, Chaguanas. Coudray left the COP in March and joined the UNC. She contested one of the posts of deputy political leaders of the UNC in that party’s internal elections and won. Ramadhar had accused he UNC of poaching COP members and called for the immediate removal of Coudray as San Fernando mayor.

He had charged that under the partnership’s Fyzabad Declaration, an agreement was made that a COP mayor would be placed in San Fernando. “There had been a breach. It is a matter for resolution by those in authority, but we will not hold back the work of the Government “We are not about compensation. The COP will never lose once T&T gains,” Ramadhar said.

“The congress decides its own course of action. Other people misinterpreted us and said we would walk away from the partnership but we never said that, we said we would assess our relationship.” He said there had been a big public debate where people had made statements about flip-flopping without caring or considering the truth.

“The congress has remained firm on what we said from day one up to this very moment,” Ramadhar said. “Others find it easy to say strength is in breaking...I don’t believe that, I believe strength is in holding on.”
