Suruj: Warner attacking T&T women
Works and Local Government Minister Dr Suruj Rambachan has accused his former colleague, Independent Liberal Party leader Jack Warner, of being a sexist over his statement about a “cabal” surrounding Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar. He also said Warner’s popularity is fast fading because people are beginning to understand that he is a “spoiler” interested only in “selfish ambition for power.” Speaking to members of the media after a visit to the Constutora OAS office at Golconda on Wednesday, after a site visit of the highway to Point Fortin project, Rambachan also accused the three councillors from the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation who defected from the People’s Partnership to join with Warner as being incompetent.
Earlier this week, the corporation’s vice-chairman and Valencia councillor Lawrence Lalla, UNC councillor for Sangre Grande North-West Dayne Francois and COP councillor for Sangre Grande North-East Quincy Luces crossed the floor to the ILP. “Sometimes people mask their incompetence by trying to do something new...I think that is what happened,” Rambachan said of their decision. “Those councillors were incompetent and they knew they would not be selected for the next local government elections, so they tried, as in local parlance, to take front before front take them.” Rambachan also defended the Prime Minister, saying Warner’s reference was both unfortunate and demeaning. “When he refers to a cabal around the PM, it is an assault, a very degrading assault to women in general, where he is saying that women cannot lead,” he said. “When he attacks Mrs Persad-Bissessar, he is attacking every woman, every girl child growing up in this country, who has aspirations to be a leader. “Women have grown under the leadership of Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Women have been given a new place, young women like Stacy Roopnarine (who accompanied him on the visit), Ramona Ramdial, Khadijah Ameen. They were children in the UNC when the UNC was formed. Something fuelled by the vision of Kamla Persad-Bissessar. That has no cabal in it.”
Rambachan said contrary to the popular notion that Warner, who is contesting the Chaguanas West seat from which he resigned months ago, is responsible for Persad-Bissessar becoming Prime Minister is a myth. He accused Warner of destroying what he could not get or control, adding that was the same strategy he used to get former political leader and prime minister Basdeo Panday to share leadership with him back in 2007. “What Mr Warner cannot get he destroys, what he cannot control he destroys...People are beginning to see that,” he said. “You cannot say you want to be part of the partnership, but you are attacking the partnership that gave birth to you. “Mr Warner was given political life only because of Mr Panday and the UNC. There is something called Neemakaram, and Maha Neemakaram. Mr Warner falls in the category of Maha Neemakaram.”
