In 2017 Shannon Hutchinson, once again, received critical acclaim for her interesting perspective on light and colour in landscape with her exhibition “Chasing the Light”. As an airline pilot, she has a bird’s eye view of the Caribbean topography every day from her “office”, the cockpit. This year, she is set to showcase a new collection of work entitled “Dusk”, which contains 50 paintings, many of which capture the essence of the Caribbean at the twilight hours from Hutchinson’s unique perspective from above.

Shannon’s love for aviation and art grew simultaneously from a young age. She grew up in the aviation industry and always aspired to fly. Shannon’s artistic career was a success from inception when she started showing her work as a teenager. By the age of 17 she had also gained her private pilot’s licence, and now, years later, she is a First Officer with Caribbean Airlines. She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from OCAD University in Toronto. In her final year, she wrote her thesis “Transience in Time and Space in Flight” in Italy where she learned how to make her own paint with raw pigments and copper dust, a technique which she still uses today and can be seen in the glossy seascapes in her upcoming show.

Over the last 20 years, her art has won awards and been showcased in well over 50 exhibitions and collections worldwide, most notably in Canada, Italy and the Caribbean.

The exhibit opens at Horizons Art Gallery on Tuesday from 7 pm to 8:30 pm and will continue until October 6. The Gallery is located at #37 Mucurapo Road, St James. Opening hours are 9 am. to 5:30 pm Mondays to Fridays and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Please call 628-9769 for more information.
