The failure of the Ministry of Works to initiate emergency repairs to dilapidated roads at Todds Road in central Trinidad has led to the Caroni Central MP using resources from the URP programme and volunteers to get the job done. Villagers staged a demonstration last month and subsequently met with Dr Glenn Ramadharsingh, the Caroni Central MP and Minister of the People and Social Development, and Works Minister Jack Warner who promised some relief when the year started. Ramadharsingh, who toured the area on Wednesday said, “The Ministry of works has challenges. I think the PURE programme (Programme for Upgrading Road Efficiency) is being reassessed and reengineered at this time they are unable to get the emergency works being done.”

Ramadharsingh said information came to his office that villagers were being instigated to stage another demonstration on Monday. Ramadharsingh said after some mediation with a team from his office the villagers decided to hold their hand and assist in finding a solution. He said volunteers from the area and a team from the URP social arm designed a low budget solution to bring some temporary relief to villagers. Ramadharsingh said he was hopeful that the Ministry of Works would step in render a more permanent solution to the problems in the area.
