Settle on Somerset Island

The Jeffery Ross Racing Special

Somerset Island will surely grab one of three places in the nine-runner Maiden Stakes over 12 furlongs of Southwell fibresand today. Talk about the best results coming from the worst races! That’s long been my theory and given process of elimination, has yielded tremendously consistent reward down the years. Somerset Island is a classic example against extremely moderate-looking opposition.
On the time-handicap, Somerset Island comes out clear best-in, based on a figure achieved on the ‘deep stuff’ over a mile. Obviously, 50 per cent further will be off-putting to serious form students but is stamina really a key? Will he need to be a dead-set stayer, opposed by ‘trees?’ There is a TH danger, Oliver Sherwood-trained Ace Serve but there has to be a reason why this four-year-old has only raced twice and been absent for 251 days. Apart from him none is capable of troubling the aforementioned duo, in the slightest. Somerset Island should be placed, by default! Michael Chapman is (again!) firmly on the ‘cold list,’ having trained 72 losers over a period of 127 days but things could warm up for the Market Rasen-based veteran, when Mazovian races off bottom-weight in the ‘aged’ handicap over seven furlongs.
Chapman has booked useful 7lbs apprentice Danny Brock for consistent Mazovian, absolutely ‘thrown-in’ judged on several efforts and rated a good bet in my book. Get on and let your bookie know you have been. Kempton stages its obligatory evening fixture and twice-raced Macy Anne is strongly-fancied to go one better in the Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over a mile of the recently refurbished polytrack. Robert Mills’ charge is reckoned useful, ran well only nine days ago and must not be opposed without good reason.
