Mohammed, Sellier take doubles title
Shenelle Mohammed made sure of a title at the Bmobile National Open Tennis Tournament yesterday when she teamed-up with Trevine Sellier to clinch the Women’s Doubles crown at the National Racquet Centre in Tacarigua.
Mohammed who was booted out of the Women’s Singles in the semi-final stage by Breana Stampfli on Wednesday, made amends when she and Sellier defeated the pair of Lindy Ann Farrier and Keneel Teasdale in the final 6-1, 6-0 on court 12.
Up to press time last night the Men’s Doubles final play-off between Akiel Duke and Javier Lewis against beaten champion Luke De Caires and Vaughn Wilson was still on court.
On Wednesday Richard Chung advanced to today’s men’s singles final when he got the better of Vaughn Wilson in a hard-fought semi-final showdown, first claiming the opening set 6-2 before surrendering the second 1-6.
But in the last set Chung, who has been considered an under-achiever based on his ability and the quality of his performances, made sure of a place in the final by beating his opponent 6-2.
He will today face overwhelming favourite Joe Cadogan in the final, after the United States-based Cadogan sealed his position at the expense of top seed Akiel Duke 6-0, 6-1.
Cadogan, who left the professional circuit to compete in the country’s top flight tournament, will be hoping to go all the way, while Chung, on the otherhand, will be looking to win the tournament for the first time.
Among the Women Carlista Mohammed could face the test of her life against Stampfli, who has dominated local tennis in the past.
A victory for Mohammed will made it her fourth straight title.
