T&T's Nyoshia Cain powers forward in the women's long jump T44 event yesterday at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

T&T’s Nyoshia Cain placed sixth in the women’s long jump T44 event yesterday at the World Para Athletics Championships in London.

Cain’s best attempt, her first, measured 3.99 metres. The 23-year-old faulted on her second and fourth try, reached 3.32m on her third jump while getting to 2.67m on her fifth attempt.

Winning gold was Great Britain’s’ Stef Reid with 5.40m, while Marlene Van Gansewinkel of the Netherlands won silver with 5.29 and bronze went to Japanese Maya Nakanishi with 5.00m.

Cain will be back on the track at the city’s iconic London Stadium tomorrow in the women’s 200m T44 event. At the United States Paralympics Track and Field National Championships in California last month, Cain struck gold in the event, getting to the line in 28.22 seconds. She will be hoping to improve on her time and get success again.

Today, Akeem Stewart will attempt to win T&T first medal at the event. The Tobagonian will throw for gold when he competes in the men’s discus F44 event, trying to better his third place finish at the 2015 edition of the Championships.

On the opening day, Friday, Jabari Knight placed eighth in the second of two heats in the men’s 100m T54 event in a time of 17.16 to place 17th overall. The local wheelchair athlete will on Tuesday line up in the men’s 200m T54 event.
