Make up for Carnival can definitely take some thought. Colours, textures, pigments, along with makeup longevity all play a very important role in determining how your face is going to look during your long hours in extreme humidity and sometimes in the rain.

So you have decided you’re going to play ‘mas’ this year, but you absolutely dread waking up way before the crack of dawn to wait in line at your favourite make-up artist’s home or venue to get your face  painted, gems stuck, eyelashes glued and glitter plastered on.  Hoping to make a successful attempt at doing your very own Carnival makeup, you decide to flip through various YouTube makeup tutorials, read blogs and magazines in order to sift through the quagmire of makeup to source the best products and methods to suit your needs. Have no fear, with a few simple tips and tricks, I will help you create such a sensation that your friends would be blown away by your look and may very well be standing in line at your door next Carnival.

Sketch a face on a plain sheet of paper and map out a design, then get creative with your makeup colours for your eyes, cheeks and lips bearing in mind the colour scheme and theme of your particular costume.

Visit your favourite craft store and select light reflective gemstones in one or several complimentary colours, face paint and or glitter if needed to complete your selected face design.  Now it’s time to pay a fun visit to your favourite cosmetic counter to select the ideal products to endure the test of our humid temperatures, light rain perhaps and some high energy dancing for unlimited hours.

Choose a waterbased, longwear foundation and powder with SPF, waterproof eyeliner and mascara, powder blush and longwear lipstick. Long wear metallic eyeshadow, pigments or finely milled glitter dust is a definite must over an eyeshadow primer and don’t forget to pick up some eyelash glue and a pair of lush, funky lashes as well as a good quality face primer and spritz spray to seal your fabulous makeup look.

Carnival Make Up Must

My choice for you would always be waterproof, preferably or at least water resistant products, oil-free, water-based and long wearing makeup formulas. Makeup with an SPF factor of at least 30 is always a plus as you would not have to deal with sunburnt, sun damaged skin after the festivities are over. Most cosmetic brands such as M.A.C have a range of stay put, Pro Longwear makeup that keeps on going with your pace for hours and hours.  Pro Longwear foundations gives up to 15 hours of wear even in hot humid conditions and controls oil to keep skin fresh, natural and flawless. The lipsticks, eye shadows, concealers, lip liners, eye liners and cheek blushes in this formula also gives varying degrees of longevity and water resistance that you can rely on.

Metal-X Creme shadows are a must for this season.  The cream to powder metallic shadows provide liquid metal-like effects that absolutely lights up in the sunlight.  It’s an easy way for a makeup amateur to make an impression as it glides on smoothly with little effort and blends like a charm offering extremely luxurious highlights for the eyes, cheeks and skin as well. I highly recommend Penultimate eyeliner to draw on your eye lines with one fluid stroke or it can be used to even draw swirly designs on your face as well.  This liquid pen-style liner provides the ultimate precise, bold lines in a rich, deep, carbon-black shade and is an ideal tool to get creative with.  Duo adhesive is a safe adhesive to attach your extreme false lashes, your face and body gemstones and decorations as it dries clear making it one of my favourite must-haves in my own professional kit.

A few more VIP products to keep in your makeup arsenal would be SplashProof Lash Mascara, waterproof as the name implies, face and eye shadow primers to enable a smoother application of products and Fix+ Spray to seal the deal.  Always remember to tuck into your Carnival pouch a pack of blot film to remove excess shine, blot pressed powder which contains mica and silica to absorb excess oil and last but not least slip in a tube of lip conditioner to keep your lips conditioned and moisturised all day and night long.

1.  Apply body glitter over Aloe Vera gel.
2.  Use a flat tip of tweezers to easily pick up gemstones and place on face.
3.  Use eyelash glue, surgical glue or spirit gum to affix gemstones.
4.  Wait for eyelash glue to get tacky on false lashes before applying.
5.  Use an eye shadow primer under pigments for long wear.
6.  Always mist on a fixative spray in final stage of makeup to seal and give longevity.
